Samsung SCH-i730 review

PDA Review : Samsung SCH-i730
The i730 is a "slider" design, with a face that lifts up to reveal a QWERTY keyboard. The picture on the left shows the "default" view of the PDA. As you can see, there is nothing terribly remarkable about the form factor or appearance of the PDA in this configuration. Once you slide the front face up, however, you have a standard backlit PDA QWERTY keyboard to use.

Features:
  • Choose between your stylus or the handy full QWERTY keyboard
  • Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PC software works with Pocket Word, Excel, and sends e-mails via Outlook
  • Access the Internet wireless virtually anywhere there's Wi-Fi service
  • Enjoy EVDO with wireless data transfers up to 10 times faster than dial-up
  • Connect your Bluetooth enabled computer, PDA, and headset to exchange information wirelessly
  • Unit Weight: 6.9 oz.

Palmone Treo 650 GSM Review

PDA Review :

Main Features
•Treo 650 smartphone

The Treo 650 smartphone from palmOne makes it easier than ever to stay connected. It simplifies your life by combining a compact mobile phone with email, an organizer, messaging, and web access. There's also Bluetooth technology so you can connect wirelessly to other Bluetooth devices. Not to mention an MP3 player, a digital camera that captures video, and a vibrant color screen that brings everything to life - all in a device that's still small enough to fit in your pocket. Seems like Treo smartphones just keep getting smarter.

Design

The Treo 650 looks very similar to the Treo 600. While most of the changes are under the hood, the most noticeable exterior differences include a slightly larger and curved keyboard, a few more buttons and a different color.

PalmOne was smart to follow in the design footsteps of the Treo 600. It's almost the same exact size, which compared to my tiny Sony Ericsson phone feels huge, but next to a Windows Mobile phone, it feels just right. The display is the same size as the Treo 600, but it packs in more pixels to quadruple the screen real estate. Below the display is a set of largely new or repurposed buttons, along with the keyboard, more on both later.
Operating System

The Treo 650 is the second palmOne unit to leverage the updated Palm OS v5.4, also known as Garnet. It's much like what can be found in the Tungsten T5, with additional software and support for the voice and data applications. In general the OS is solid, though I have experienced unexpected reboots with some applications. It seems to be a software compatibility issue; I suppose not all developers have worked out the bugs associated with running their software in this new environment.

Memory

The Treo 650 memory is a love hate sort of thing. palmOne made a smart move by adding non-volatile memory. That means when the Treo loses power, the memory will not be wiped out. But at the same time, they only made 23.7 MB available to the user, which stores some files less efficiently than the Treo 600, resulting in less net storage space. palmOne has resolved the situation by providing users who request it with a free 128MB memory card. They think the memory can be used more efficiently with a software patch, but at this time, no patch is available.

It's really a shame that this is even an issue. After determining that business users would rather have more memory than WiFi in the Tungsten T5; there is no reasonable explanation for why the Treo 650 got such a raw deal in the memory department. While it's true that many users will find the memory ample for all their contacts, email and a few games, it's really not enough for moderate to power users. I maxed out the RAM with 6 applications in addition to what comes pre-installed. Of course programs can be installed to the Secure Digital card slot, but taking cards in and out is a pain and they're hard to keep track of.

For light users, the memory isn't going to be a problem at all, but anyone who was busting at the seems with a Treo 600, is going to be in a worse position now. The memory issue is the most significant Treo 650 blunder in my view and sadly one that can't really be improved on, short of a removable memory card. While it's not a deal killer, it's a mistake that simply should not have been made. Whoever thought this was a good idea needs to be removed from the planning team for future devices.

palmOne Tungsten E2 Review

PDA Review :

Best selling. Best value. Most popular with new users.

Sounds more like a tag line for the Toyota Camry than a handheld computer. But much like the well selling Camry, the palmOne Tungsten E was very accessible and made a very effective impression on those who were looking for a PDA. Combining a great price and a nice package of included software, the Tungsten E basically ran away with sales records selling over a million units in the past 17 months. And even more like the Camry, when it comes time for updating and redesigning, you can either take the drastic route (see the last two generations of the Ford Taurus to see what happened there), or take the evolutionary route and just fine tune things here and there. For the Tungsten E2, palmOne took the latter route and refined an effective formula resulting in one of the best buys in the PDA world.

The refresh of the Tungsten E comes in the form of the Tungsten E2. If you will, think of the 2 as meaning version 2.0. There were many aspects of the original TE that needed refinement such as; battery life, faulty screens and buttons on some models, and the lack of wireless options such as Bluetooth or WiFi for getting online. The Tungsten E2 addresses these issues, and does so without missing a beat.
Compared to the Tungsten E the Tungsten E2 has:

* A faster processor, 200MHz versus 126MHz
* More available memory, 29.7 versus 28.8, though both have a total of 32MB (the non-usable memory is used as heap space)
* Non-volatile memory, so important data won't be lost if the battery dies
* A screen with true colors and higher brightness levels (30% brighter and 40% better color saturation)
* A bigger battery with software improvements for better battery handling
* Bluetooth wireless technology for connecting to other Bluetooth devices such as phones, PDAs, and printers
* The new palmOne multi-connector (which is much faster than the previous mini-USB connector)
* New software features, like Documents To Go 7.0 and the favorites view in the application launcher

So what do I think about it? In short, this is an attractive update to a very popular model and the price stays reasonable (suggested retail price of $249). There are still some rough edges, but the positives more than make up for it. Read on to find out specific thoughts, and participate in the discussion to give you own thoughts.

In the Box

The TE2 comes in an attractively designed plastic casing that seemed much easier to open than some other casings. The TE2 is well displayed and the other materials are in a maroon box.

This is what's in the package:

* Quick Start Guide
* PalmOne software installation CD
* USB sync cable that now uses the palmOne multi-connector found on the Tungsten T5 and Treo 650 models
* Power cable
* Flip cover
* Graffiti 2 stickers
* One palmOne Universal Screen protector
* Software installation CD

Getting started is as simple as making sure that the E2 is charged and then installing the software to your computer for its first HotSync. Unlike previous models, it is best to make a clean install of the Palm Desktop software and all the conduits, as well as to remove any backup folders that you may have via a previous version of Palm Desktop. If you are a current owner of the T5, I would not recommend uninstalling Palm Desktop as the versions are the same.

    Why you need a PDA

    Some basic reasoning behind purchasing a PDA
    Hey, is that one of those PDA things? That thing got Pacman?" Boy, I hear that a lot! Let me make it very clear that a PDA is more than a glorified Gameboy. You can take notes, look up a phone number, write and send and email and so much more. Alright, I do have Pacman (and about 30 other games!), but you're missing the point.

    Let's start by explaining what a PDA is. PDA stands for Personal Digital Assistant and, basically, it's a handheld computer. My first PDA was more powerful then my first desktop computer 10 years ago. You can see an extremely good timetable of the PDA in Elsewhere on the Web. The 2 main Operating Systems for the PDA are the Palm and Pocket PC (see related resources), but no matter the brand, the PDA has some basic features:

    - Datebook--This is most important part of the organizer.
    meetings, appointments, etc., all in basically the same format as a large, bulky Day Planner.

    - Memo Pad--A place to jot notes, write a book, whatever.
    - Calculator--Math.
    - To-Do List--Helps you accomplish those nagging tasks
    - Address Book--Keeps track of all your important contacts.
    - OnScreen Keyboard--Lets you type with the touch screen and your stylus.
    - Grafitti(Palm)/Character Recognizer(Pocket PC)--Lets you handwrite instead of Type
    - Email--Lets you compose email and send on HotSync or wireless.
    - Backlight (most PDAs)--Priceless in dim lighting.

    If you've ever looked at a calendar, jotted a note on a napkin, carried a planner , then a PDA is for you. There is also a lot of entertainment value in the PDA. You can find thousands of games to please any taste. There's software to carry your pictures, listen to music, watch a movie, you name it!

    PDAs have a tendency to intimidate non-computer types, but for most people the learning curve is easier than using a home or office computer.

    Be sure to really explore this site, read the articles, chat, read the forums....I'll help to educate you and excite you about purchasing that first PDA or upgrading to the latest and greatest thing. Once you own a PDA let's do a little programming, a little tinkering, and just have some fun!

    Enjoy !

    How to Buy a PDA

    PDA Shopping Tips
    Whether you want to buy a basic organizer or a more sophisticated pocket system, our purchasing advice will help you pick the right PDA for your needs.

    Of course, before you buy a PDA, try to kick the tires first. Check to see how well you can read the screen with the backlight off. If the unit has a keyboard, try it out for size, and make sure the buttons are reasonably comfortable and solid.

    If you're looking for a cell phone and a PDA, you should consider a hybrid PDA/phone like the Treo or Sidekick so that you don't end up lugging around two separate devices. If you tend to be on the road a lot and need to check your e-mail regularly, you might also consider models that offer Internet access--either through a built-in cell phone modem, a Bluetooth connection to a cell phone, or a built-in 802.11b or 802.11g wireless network interface.

    Shopping tips for buying a basic organizer:
    Choose your OS. If you simply need to maintain an up-to-date appointment calendar, contact list, and to-do list when you are away from your PC, your best bet is to stick with lower-end Palm OS devices, such as the Palm Zire line. They will also handle other applications (which can come in handy), but their easy-to-use data synchronization stands out. The higher-end Palms extend the no-brainer simplicity of the OS to other functions, such as color screen display and wireless e-mail and messaging.
    Get a monochrome screen. It's all you need for viewing calendars and contact information, your batteries will last longer, and you'll save money.
    Extend your PDA's abilities with third-party software. Thousands of applications have been written for Palm PDAs and are available for downloading at sites like Tucows and PalmGear.com. One of the most popular titles, DataViz's Documents to Go, allows you to edit Word and Excel documents and view PowerPoint files on your Palm-based PDA. Overall, you'll find much more third-party software written for the Palm OS than for Pocket PC devices, though FreewarePPC.com has a good selection of free apps for Windows Mobile handhelds.

    Shopping tips for buying a PDA with advanced features:
    Choose your OS. Because of their familial relationship with Windows, Pocket PC devices handle PC-like apps better while still offering conventional scheduling and contact synchronization functions. But Palm OS devices have recently caught up with the other features Pocket PC devices offer. Both can play digital audio, show video clips, and display digital photographs. In the end, it's a question of which you prefer, so try out both at a local electronics store and see which works best for you.
    Get a storage card. CompactFlash and Secure Digital cards allow you to store music or video that you can listen to or watch on your PDA. CompactFlash cards are cheaper than Secure Digital ones, but they are also physically larger.
    Consider opting for a color screen. Color means big bucks in PDAs, but it's great for games and video.
    Keep connectivity in mind. PDAs with built-in Wi-Fi networking and/or Bluetooth will help you get more done, with fewer wires. If this appeals to you, check the connectivity options closely.

    PDA REVIEW :PDA News - Axim X51v photos, SonyEricsson P950 pics & specs, i-mate launches Universal

    User purports photos of Axim X51v

    A user a Dell Axim enthusiast website has posted photos of what he claims is the upcoming Dell Axim X51v. The images depict a model nearly identical to the X50v, apparently running Windows Mobile 5.0.

    The images show no apparent photographic manipulation, but are of low quality, apparently having been taken with a CompactFlash camera card.

    Leaked pics, specs of P950

    Reported photos and specifications of the next SonyEricsson high-end Symbian smartphone have surfaced. The device, code-named "Hermione," reputedly features a QVGA screen, tri-band GSM/GPRS/UMTS, 2 MP camera with autofocus, WiFi, and a 208 MHz processor.

    i-mate offers HTC Universal

    Popular device reseller i-mate is now offering their own branded version of the much anticipated HTC Universal VGA PocketPC phone. Called the i-mate JASJAR (not a typo, just a God-awful name), the Universal offers tri-band GSM/GPRS, Bluetooth, WiFi, and a 1.3 MP camera. Don't pull out your wallet, though--the JASJAR is suitable in the US only for use on T-Mobile, and in any event it's priced at $1,200
